There are only four Shakers left in the world. If you dont know who the Shakers are, they are (were) devoted to confession of sin, communalism, and celibacy. They are called Shakers because their ecstatic worship would involve running around in a circle together--singing and, well, shaking. (They also had some kind of divine mother who uttered revelation, which just might scoot them well beyond the pale of orthodoxy...) Nonetheless, I ask the question: what killed this movement? Was it the celibacy? The uncomfortable lifestyle? The lack of a compelling mission?
